Law Student Scholarships

The New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association Foundation and the New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association are proud to support students of the UNM School of Law by providing scholarships to assist students with the expenses related to bar exam courses and the expenses of purchasing books during the school year. Book scholarships are open to first and second year law students, while Bar scholarships are open to 3L's taking the New Mexico Bar either in February or July.

The selection committee considers the following criteria in awarding scholarships: (1) involvement in the Hispanic community, student organizations, other community organizations, civic, charitable, legal or social justice endeavors; (2) academic achievement; and (3) financial need. For bar scholarships, the committee also takes into account an applicant's interest or experience in public interest law.

Also, since 2008, the scholarship committee has awarded a scholarship to a third year law student in the name of Eddie Benavidez, a founding member of the NMHBA. For a list of past recipients please click here. The scholarship is awarded to a student who serves as a positive role model, has an interest in working in an area of law that advocates for the underprivileged, has a desire for change or social movement that broadens opportunities for hispanics in New Mexico and who is active in an organization that furthers the achievements and/or opportunities of people of color.

Bar Scholarship Application (Application due March 31st, 2017)

Thanks to the success of the NMHBA's recent fundraising efforts, in 2014, the NMHBA established a new scholarship at the UNM School of Law that is awarded to an incoming law student. The NMHBA Foundation Scholarship covers a portion of the tuition for a first year law student who meets the following criteria:

1) financial need,
2) academic achievement,
3) New Mexico resident, New Mexico high school graduate, or otherwise significant connection to New Mexico,
4) commitment to issues of importance to the Hispanic community and commitment to serving Hispanic community after graduation,
5) community involvement (in particular, involvement with Hispanic community)
6) intent to remain in New Mexico following graduation,
7) other considerations (any circumstances that the applicant would like the committee to consider, such as overcoming adversity).

The scholarship is open to accepted applicants at UNM School of Law and is awarded in the spring of each year. For more information, please visit the UNM School of Law's website (http://lawschool.unm.edu/admissions/financial-aid/scholarships.php) and click on "New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association Foundation Scholarship."

The NMHBA and the NMHBA Foundation are proud to support UNM's law students competing in the Hispanic National Bar Association's Annual Moot Court Competition. Each spring, the NMHBA and the NMHBA Foundation award a scholarship to each of the students competitors to assist with the costs of competing in the competition, including travel and lodging.
