The New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association Foundation and the New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association are proud to support students of the UNM School of Law by providing scholarships to assist students with the expenses related to bar exam courses and the expenses of purchasing books during the school year. Book scholarships are open to first and second year law students, while Bar scholarships are open to 3L's taking the New Mexico Bar either in February or July.
The selection committee considers the following criteria in awarding scholarships: (1) involvement in the Hispanic community, student organizations, other community organizations, civic, charitable, legal or social justice endeavors; (2) academic achievement; and (3) financial need. For bar scholarships, the committee also takes into account an applicant's interest or experience in public interest law.
Also, since 2008, the scholarship committee has awarded a scholarship to a third year law student in the name of Eddie Benavidez, a founding member of the NMHBA. For a list of past recipients please click

The scholarship is awarded to a student who serves as a positive role model, has an interest in working in an area of law that advocates for the underprivileged, has a desire for change or social movement that broadens opportunities for hispanics in New Mexico and who is active in an organization that furthers the achievements and/or opportunities of people of color.
